A psychopathic, schizophrenic right-hand man of Rupert Thorne, Jack secretly leads the Red Hood gang, aiming to take down Thorne and Black Mask and become Gotham's new crime boss. When a trap set by Thorne leads him to Ace Chemicals, Jack faces Batman for the first time and stumbles into a vat of chemicals, shattering his mind, leaving him completely insane with white skin and red lips. He soon becomes Gotham's most notorious criminal, now known as the Joker thanks to his new appearance and lucky deck of cards. A poker enthusiast, Jack sees Batman as his complete opposite, the natural living manifestations of order and chaos.
