Makena Okorie is the protagonist of the story. She has autism but finds ways to deal with her condition by spending more time with Lesedi and attempting to get out of her comfort zone. After her father's death, she, Lesedi, and their mother move to a middle-class neighborhood in hopes of solving their financial issues as well as enrolling Makena and Lesedi to Appleton Prep School, a predominantly white school where Makena makes 3 friends and deals with racism and bullying throughout the school year.
