An all-mighty cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force is headed for Earth targeting Jean Grey, intent on using her as a vessel. When the Avengers, joined by Captain Marvel who has awakened from her coma, learn of this, they set out to find Jean and put her in protective custody. The X-Men feel like they're arresting her and refuse to hand her over. This causes a conflict between the Avengers & the X-Men.
