Amel Bent Bachir (born 21 June 1985) is a French R&B and pop singer who gained fame after reaching the semi-finals of season 2 of French TV singing competition Nouvelle Star. She is best-selling artist to come from that competition. She is currently a "coach" on the similar French talent show The Voice: la plus belle voix. Amel Bent grew up in the Paris suburb of La Courneuve with her Algerian father and Moroccan mother. She has a brother and a sister. Her career jump started after making it to the semi-finals of the reality TV show Nouvelle Star 2, France's version of Pop Idol. Although her performance did not make it to the finals, she was still noticed by some of the show's producers, and would end up making her début album later that year, titled: Un Jour d'été, released in late 2004. The album would sell more than 550,000 copies in France alone, but the success of the album would ultimately be derived from the single "Ma Philosophie", which would sell at more than 500,000 copies, staying at the No. 1 slot in France, for more than six weeks during and after sales. In 2012, Bent was one of the contestants during the Third Season of Danse avec les stars. She and her partner Christophe Licata finished in second place, but won the celebrity dancing show's Christmas special. For her single "je reste" 2011, Bent co-starred with the actor from Metal Hurlant Chronicles Karl E. Landler Source: Article "Amel Bent" from Wikipedia in english, licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0.

The film starts with a street peddler, guiding us through the streets of the fictional Arabian city of Agrabah, which is based mainly on a medieval city in the Middle East, the home of the 1001 Arabian Nights, and there are some inconsistencies in the time period. After trying to sell us on her wares, she pulls out an old oil lamp, claiming it "once changed the course of a young woman's life. A young woman who like this lamp was more than what he seemed: A diamond in the rough." The peddler then begins to tell us a tale, beginning on a dark night, where the Sultana's Grand Vizier, Jawahir, meets with a thief named Ghada, who hands over half of a gold scarab beetle, of which Jawahir has the second half. Putting them together, the beetle flies off, before causing a giant tiger's head to rise from the sand: A place known as the Cave of Wonders. Jawahir summons Ghada to enter, instructing her to retrieve a lamp inside. However, upon approaching the Tiger's Head, it speaks that only one may enter: "One whose worth lies far within: the Diamond in the Rough!" Ghada still attempts to enter upon Jawahir's orders, but upon entering the tiger's mouth, it bites down on the thief, closing off the entryway before instructing Jawahir again to seek out the Diamond in the Rough it was referring to. It is then that Jawahir realizes she needs to find the Diamond in the Rough in order to enter. Jawahir seeks to become sultana herself and become the new ruler of Agrabah.
