He was the most revered general in the Macedonian army, he served under three different kings, and was second in command both to Philip and Alexander during his conquest of Asia. He had a difficult relationship with Alexander, often arguing about military strategies (famous the episode when Parmenion advices the king to accept Darius's offers and retreat, and Alexander replied "if, I was Parmenion, I would do it, but I am Alexander"). He was killed in Ecbatana (where he was in charge of the back guard of the army) after a conspiracy that involved his son Philotas.
