Oxyartes was a noblemen from Sogdiana and father of Roxane, first wife of Alexander. He was one of the generals that betrayed Bessus when he was taken prisoner by Ptolemy. He joined Spitamenes, and was besieged at the Sogdian rock. After some of Alexander's men (The agrianes) reached the fort, he surrendered and gave to the king his daughter's hand. The Sogdians were related to the Scythians, peoples from eurasian steppes.
