Alexander of Epirus, was uncle of Alexander the great, and king of his country, being part of the Molossian dynasty (claiming to be descendants of Achilles). He married his niece, Cleopatra, to strength the alliance with Philip, killed during the wedding. Alexander, while his nephew was in Asia, was fighting in Italy, defending the greek city of Taras (Apulia) against the local indigenous tribes. He died during an ambush in the mountains of Lucania in 331 BC.
