Hürrem Sultan, born Roxelana, was the highly influential wife of Suleiman the Magnificent. Enslaved from her home in modern Ukraine, she won the favor of the sultan and was one of the first mothers of a future heir to be truly married to an Ottoman ruler. Her influence led to the so-called "Century of Women", a time where the harem and the valide sultan (queens mother) exerted extreme influence on the Ottoman Empire.
