William Garcia of California was almost the first fatality of the marathon. He collapsed on the side of the road after 19 miles and was hospitalized with haemorrhaging. The dust coated his oesophagus and ripped his stomach lining. If Garcia had gone another hour untreated, he would have bled to death.
